Another great book about the risks of AI, but this time it focuses specifically on OpenAI. The main subject throughout the story is the risk of concentrating power in the wrong hands, the manipulation of the AI narrative, scraping data from the entire internet without consent, draining resources from the Earth, labor exploitation in the Global South, and digital colonialism—wiping "low-resource" languages from use.

It was especially interesting to have the OpenAI vs. Sam Altman saga in one place and to find out details about the key actors and their paths within OpenAI.

I still believe that, despite the serious risks, AI can bring huge benefits to humanity, especially in science and medicine. However, as we face these technological changes, we need to stop treating the negative effects as just temporary problems. If we want to see the positive side of AI, we must hold the companies building it responsible. We need to make sure that the entire process of creating this technology respects human rights and the environment just as much as it values processing power.

Про книжку

When AI expert and investigative journalist Karen Hao first began covering OpenAI in 2019, she thought they were the good guys. Founded as a nonprofit with safety enshrined as its core mission, the organization was meant, its leader Sam Altman told us, to act as a check against more purely mercantile, and potentially dangerous, forces. What could go wrong?

Over time, Hao began to wrestle ever more deeply with that question. Increasingly, she realized that the core truth of this massively disruptive sector is that its vision of success requires an almost unprecedented amount of resources: the “compute” power of high-end chips and the processing capacity to create massive large language models, the sheer volume of data that needs to be amassed at scale, the humans “cleaning up” that data for sweatshop wages throughout the Global South, and a truly alarming spike in the usage of energy and water underlying it all.
